Our mission statement
charity
Charity, the cornerstone of every Elk structure, the highest virtue of every Elk creed is demonstrated by remembering that the kindliest
feeling may vanish, the best resolve may be forgotten; but the influence of a good deed, honestly and properly
performed, will continue forever.
JUSTICE
Even-handed Justice is one of the great hallmarks of our Order.
This standard reflects our faithful adherence to one of the great teachings of this emblem: “Do unto others as we would they should do unto us.”
brotherly love
Brotherly Love is the foundation and ground work of our Order. It is best exemplified by practicing the teachings of our motto: “The faults of our Members we write upon
the sand, their virtues upon the tablets of love and
memory.”
And Fidelity
Fidelity requires strict adherence to our Obligation and faithfulness in the discharge or our duties as members of society. The Order of Elks is distinctively American. Linking the destiny of our Order with the destiny of our country, we have made its Flag the symbol of the crowning virtue.
A little Bit of Elks Organizational history...
With everything closed on Sundays because of New York City Blue Laws, a group of theatrical people began meeting for their own amusement in the late 1860's. A loose organization was formed to make sure the larder was well-stocked for these gatherings. They called themselves the Jolly Corks.
When one of their members died shortly before Christmas in 1867, leaving his wife and children destitute, the Jolly Corks decided that in addition to good fellowship, they needed a more enduring organization to serve those in need.
On February 16, 1868, they established the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Membership grew rapidly. Elks traveling to other cities spread the word of the Brotherhood of Elks. Soon there were requests for Elks Lodges in cities other than New York. In response, the Elks asked the New York State legislature for a charter authorizing the establishment of a Grand Lodge with the power to establish local Lodges anywhere in the United States. The first local charter was New York Lodge No. 1 on March 10, 1871.
